Dengue toll increases to 43; Health calls for a crusade against the sickness
SANTO DOMINGO. There were 9 fatalities from the dengue fever in a week and this brings the total for the year to 43 deaths and making it one of the most important epidemics of this year.
The total of the cases registered an increase of 734, according to the official numbers.
Three of the new deaths were registered yesterday at the Robert Reid Cabral Pediatric Hospital, and another in the city of Santiago.
The deaths reported at the children's hospital occurred in less than 48 hours and between them there were two three year old minors that were hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
The children lived together with their parents in the city of Bani, and in the sector of Villa Mella, places that a listed as having a high incidence of the disease.
The Minister of Public Health, Bautista Rojas Gomez, reported yesterday that he contacted the Minister of Education, Melanio Paredes, in order to involve the 2.7 million students and teachers in the work to clean up the areas and search for breeding places of mosquitoes and eliminate them.
He also met with the Dominican Federation of Cities, and their representatives committed to asking the city councils to intensify the work of cleaning up the garbage that has become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
He said that the mobilization efforts are the result of the strategies that include selective spraying efforts in the places in which there have been cases of dengue registered around the country.
Rojas Gomez explained that of the RD$41 million that he ordered used to fight the dengue problem, and of that, he used RD$10 million for the promotion and education campaign of prevention of the disease and promised to keep up the efforts in 2010.
He explained that it was through the Center for the Control of Tropical Diseases (CENCET), the General Director of Environmental Health and the provincial departments of the ministry are disseminating educational material, brochures, and preventive guides in specific points around the country.
The most affected areas
According to the official data, the provinces that have more cases this year than last are Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Vega, Montecristi, Bahoruco, La Romana, La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macoris, Peravia, Sanchez Ramirez, Samana, El Seibo, Salcedo (Hermanas Mirabal), Santiago Rodriguez, Barahona and Azua.
