Fernandez inaugurates and oversees projects in Moca
The chief executive also took a look at some highway projects in the area
MOCA. President Leonel Fernandez looked over several public works projects in the province of Espaillat, inaugurated the new correctional and rehabilitation center at La Isleta, and the highway to the penal institution, these last two projects built with a government investment of more than RD$460 million.
The Chief of State began is visit at 12:02 p.m. at the intersection of the Duarte Highway and the Ramon Caceres Avenue, where he looked over the work of the cloverleaf being built there.
During the activity, the Minister of Public Works, Victor Diaz Rua announced that the roadway project will be finished in February 2010 with an investment of RD$326 million.
Later on the President went over to the community of La Isleta in Espaillat province, accompanied by his wife, Margarita Cedeño and other officials headed up the delegation that inaugurated the Correctional and Rehabilitation Center at La Isleta, built at a cost of RD$261,869,363.
The blessing of the facility was done by the auxiliary bishop of Santiago, Valentin Reynoso, and the central speech was given by the Attorney General of the Republic Radhames Jimenez, who emphasized the social impact of the new penal facility.
"We hope that this penal center will contribute to the peace and security of the province of Espaillat and the neighboring provinces by producing proper and useful citizens", said Jimenez.
The Rehabilitation Center has a capacity for 1,200 inmates, and includes 14 classrooms equipped by the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), as well as areas for sports, cultural, recreational and spiritual activities.
The prison also has four workshops for metal working, textile processes, woodworking, and electricity, where beds, furniture, school desks, uniforms, bed covers and power inverters can be made.
Other personalities that attended the inauguration of the center were Jose Luis Corripio Estrada, Senator Francisco Dominguez Brito, Minister of the Armed Forces Lieutenant General Pedro Antonio Peña Antonio, Jose Rafael Lantigua, the director of the National Penitentiary Schools, Roberto Santana, Jose Rafael Vargas from Indotel and others.
